QUANTRILL, William Clarke
- QUANTRILL, William Clarke
(1837–1865)
Historically, Quantrill was a schoolteacher turned Southern partisan, known for developing guerilla hit-and-run raids of Union sympathizers in Kansas and Missouri. History usually portrays him as a cruel, vicious murderer and opportunist. In 1863 Quantrill’s raiders sacked Lawrence, Kansas, killing over 100 people and torching the city. Like other Civil War characters, Quantrill has been interpreted both negatively and sympathetically. Among his proteges were Frank and Jesse James, the Dalton brothers, and Bloody Bill Anderson— all subjects of legend and numerous films. In Kansas Raiders (1950), Quantrill (Brian Donlevy) serves as a charismatic type of father figure to Jesse James (Audie Murphy). In Dark Command (1940), Quantrill (Walter Pidgeon) was the admired schoolteacher to the John Wayneand Roy Rogerscharacters, who both die in the raid. Most films about the James and Dalton gangs in some way refer to their early connections with Quantrill. An early plot element in Clint Eastwood’s The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) has Wales joining an offshoot of Quantrill’s band led by Bloody Bill Anderson (John Russell).
